What is gamification?
Chris Murphy | Jun 2023

Gamification is an exciting approach that brings game-like elements into everyday activities to make them more interesting and engaging. Its use in the marketing industry, particularly when focused around med comms, can be a valuable tool to educate and motivate users, whether these be patients, HCPs, or any other stakeholder.

Gamification involves the use of game mechanics such as challenges, rewards, and progress tracking to encourage users to actively participate in a given activity. This activity may be encouraging HCPs to engage in new educational material or perhaps enable patients to learn more about their condition in an engaging format.

Fitbit

Possibly one of the most one of the most well-known instances of healthcare related gamification is the Fitbit. Fitbit employs gamification techniques to motivate and engage users in their fitness journey. Through the use of rewards and incentives, such as discounts and extra features, Fitbit encourages individuals to complete specific tasks like logging their steps or reaching milestones. By turning these activities into achievable goals and providing a sense of accomplishment, Fitbit taps into the inherent human desire for competition and achievement.

How Ashfield MedComms utilise Gamification

At AMC, we have been able to leverage the principles of gamification for a number of clients by building simple-to-play and engaging quiz-style games for use on congress booths. Informally encouraging fun competition between HCPs means that we can tap into the aforementioned inherent human desire for achievement. As HCPs take on the quizzes, the engine retains all scores anonymously, but later gives the user the option to add their scores to a leader board that is updated in real-time on a booth screen.
